2. The T-Shaped or U-Shaped Room
Hallways or rooms with large entryways often form a T or U shape. These can typically be divided into three distinct rectangles.

3. Rooms with Alcoves or Bay Windows
If a rectangular bedroom has a small rectangular alcove for a wardrobe, treat the main room as Rectangle A, and the alcove as Rectangle B.

Step-by-Step Guide to Calculating an L-Shaped Room

Let's walk through a practical example of a large, open-plan living and dining room shaped like an 'L'.

Imagine you are standing at the bottom of the 'L' looking up.

  • The longest wall on the left side is 8 meters.
  • The wall at the very top is 4 meters wide.
  • The wall on the right side (coming down from the top) is 5 meters.
  • The wall cutting inward (the inner corner of the 'L') is 3 meters.
  • The bottom-most wall is 7 meters wide (4m + 3m).
  • The wall returning up to the starting point is 3 meters (8m - 5m).

Step 1: Divide the Room
Let's draw an imaginary horizontal line extending from the inner corner to the left wall. We have now split the L-shape into two rectangles:

  • Rectangle 1 (Top Section): The dining area.
  • Rectangle 2 (Bottom Section): The living area.

Step 2: Measure Each Rectangle

  • Rectangle 1 Dimensions: The top wall is 4 meters wide. The right wall is 5 meters long.
    Area 1 = 4 m × 5 m = 20 m²

  • Rectangle 2 Dimensions: The bottom wall is 7 meters wide. The short vertical wall on the bottom left is 3 meters (this is the 8m total left wall minus the 5m top section).
    Area 2 = 7 m × 3 m = 21 m²

Step 3: Add the Areas Together
Total Room Area = Area 1 (20 m²) + Area 2 (21 m²) = 41 m²

Angled Walls (Triangles)
If a room has a slanted wall cutting across a corner, the room is essentially a rectangle with a triangle sliced off, or a rectangle with a triangle added to it.
To calculate a right-angled triangle (the most common in floor plans), the formula is:
Triangle Area = (Base × Height) / 2

Curved Bay Windows (Half-Circles)
If you have a perfectly semi-circular bay window, you need the circle formula.
Measure the straight distance across the opening of the bay window (the diameter). Divide that by 2 to get the radius.
Area of a Full Circle = π × (Radius × Radius) (where π is roughly 3.14159)

Practical Tips for Multi-Piece Measurement

  1. Sketch It Out: Never try to keep the numbers in your head. Draw a rough sketch of the room on a piece of paper, including all nooks and crannies. Write the measurements directly onto the corresponding walls of your sketch.
  2. Use Masking Tape: If you are having trouble visualizing where to divide an open-concept space, place a small piece of painter's tape on the floor where your imaginary dividing lines will go. Measure up to the tape.
  3. Double-Check Your Math: In an L-shaped room, the length of the two smaller parallel walls should always add up to the length of the longest parallel wall. In our example above, the 4m top wall + 3m inner wall equals the 7m bottom wall. If these don't match, your measurements are off.
  4. Don't Forget the Waste Rate: If you are calculating this area to buy flooring (like laminate or tiles), remember that irregular rooms require more cutting than square rooms. Always add a higher waste rate (around 10% to 15%) to your final total.
