If you are preparing for the Turkish university entrance exam (YKS), taking practice tests is an essential part of your daily routine. However, looking at a test paper and seeing that you scored "70 correct and 15 incorrect answers" doesn't directly tell you if you've done enough to get into your dream university. In the Turkish system, raw exam performance is only one piece of the puzzle. The final determining factor for university admissions is your Placement Score (Yerleştirme Puanı), which is a combination of your exam performance and your high school academic record.
Understanding the math behind this conversion can save you a lot of anxiety. In this article, we will explain exactly how raw net scores are converted into final placement scores, demystify the crucial "OBP" multiplier, and demonstrate how to effortlessly track your progress using our TYT Score Calculator.
Step 1: Finding Your "Net" Score
As we've discussed in previous guides, the TYT employs a negative marking system. You do not just get points for correct answers; you lose points for incorrect ones. Specifically, four incorrect answers will erase one correct answer.
To find your "Net" score for any section (Turkish, Math, Social Sciences, or Science), you use the following formula:
Net = Correct Answers - (Incorrect Answers ÷ 4)
Example: You answered 30 questions correctly in Turkish, but got 6 wrong.
Net = 30 - (6 ÷ 4) = 30 - 1.5 = 28.5 Net.
Step 2: Calculating the Raw Exam Score (Ham Puan)
Once you have your net scores for all four sections, they must be converted into a standardized point value. The testing authority (ÖSYM) assigns specific coefficients (katsayılar) to each test based on national averages and standard deviation.
While these coefficients fluctuate slightly every year, the standard approximations used for planning are:
- Turkish: ~3.3 points per net
- Math: ~3.3 points per net
- Social Sciences: ~3.4 points per net
- Science: ~3.4 points per net
To calculate your Raw Score, you multiply your net scores by these coefficients, add them all together, and finally, add the 100 Base Points (Taban Puan) that the system grants to every valid test taker.
A Practical Example:
Let's say a student has the following net scores:
- Turkish: 25 Net (x 3.3 = 82.5 points)
- Math: 20 Net (x 3.3 = 66.0 points)
- Social Sciences: 10 Net (x 3.4 = 34.0 points)
- Science: 5 Net (x 3.4 = 17.0 points)
Sum of Tests = 199.5 points.
Raw Score = 199.5 + 100 (Base Score) = 299.5 Raw Points.
This Raw Score (299.5) represents the student's pure academic performance on the day of the exam. However, this is not the score used for university admissions.
Step 3: Enter the OBP (Ortaöğretim Başarı Puanı)
This is where many international students or those unfamiliar with the Turkish system get confused. The OBP, or "Secondary Education Success Score," is essentially your High School GPA transformed into a standardized multiplier that gets added to your Raw Score.
The Turkish educational system heavily rewards students who maintained high grades throughout all four years of high school. A high OBP can propel a student ahead of thousands of competitors who had the exact same raw exam score.
How to Calculate Your OBP Contribution
- Find your graduation GPA: This is out of 100. Let's assume you graduated with an 85/100 average.
- Calculate the OBP Base: Multiply your GPA by 5. (85 x 5 = 425 OBP). The maximum possible OBP is 500 (for a 100/100 GPA), and the minimum is 250 (for a 50/100 passing GPA).
- Calculate the Final Contribution: Multiply your OBP Base by the standard coefficient of 0.12.
(425 x 0.12 = 51 points)
Shortcut Formula: Simply multiply your high school graduation GPA (out of 100) by 0.6.
(85 x 0.6 = 51 points).
Creating the Placement Score (Yerleştirme Puanı)
Now, we combine the two elements. We take the Raw Score from Step 2 (299.5 points) and add the OBP Contribution from Step 3 (51 points).
Final Placement Score: 299.5 + 51 = 350.5 Points.
This final score of 350.5 is the official number you will use to select your university preferences and compete for a spot in a bachelor's or associate degree program.
Beware of the "Broken OBP" Penalty
There is a critical rule in the Turkish placement system known as the "Kırık OBP" (Broken OBP). If you took the YKS exam in the previous year, made your university preferences, and were successfully placed into a higher education program (regardless of whether you actually enrolled or attended), you are penalized if you decide to take the exam again the following year.
If you fall into this category, your OBP multiplier is slashed in half. Instead of multiplying your OBP Base by 0.12, it is multiplied by 0.06.
Using our previous example of the student with an 85 GPA:
- Normal OBP Contribution: 51 points.
- Broken OBP Contribution: 25.5 points.
That 25.5-point loss is massive. In the highly competitive middle tiers of the exam, a 25-point deficit can drop a student's ranking by over 100,000 places. This is why students are strongly advised never to include a university department on their preference list unless they are absolutely certain they want to study there.
Use the Calculator to Automate the Math
Doing this math manually every time you take a weekend practice test is exhausting and prone to calculation errors. We built the TYT Score Calculator specifically to automate this entire workflow.
With our tool, you only need to perform two simple actions:
- Input your correct and incorrect answer counts for each of the four sections.
- Input your OBP Base score (your GPA x 5).
The tool instantly processes the 4-to-1 negative marking penalty, applies the subject coefficients, adds the 100 base points, and factors in your exact OBP contribution to display your estimated Placement Score in real-time. It even includes advanced toggles to simulate the "Broken OBP" penalty or adjust subject coefficients based on perceived exam difficulty.
Stop guessing where you stand. Calculate your Placement Score today and take control of your university preparation strategy!
