Foreign nationals, international students, and expat professionals looking to enter the Turkish academic system or secure state-affiliated positions inevitably face a critical choice: Should I take the YDS or the YÖKDİL?

Both exams serve as official proof of foreign language proficiency in Turkey. They are both administered by ÖSYM (Student Selection and Placement Center) and are widely accepted by universities. However, their formats, difficulty levels, and intended audiences differ significantly.

In this article, we will compare the YDS and YÖKDİL exams to help you make an informed decision, and explain how you can use our YDS Score Calculator to track your progress for either test.

What is YDS?

The YDS (Yabancı Dil Bilgisi Seviye Tespit Sınavı) is the older, more established exam. It tests general language proficiency across a wide array of topics, ranging from history and psychology to biology and astronomy.

  • Scope: General. You will encounter vocabulary and reading passages from various disciplines.
  • Difficulty: Generally considered harder because of the broad vocabulary required.
  • Validity: Universally accepted for all academic positions, Master's/Ph.D. applications, and state language compensation (Dil Tazminatı).

What is YÖKDİL?

The YÖKDİL (Yükseköğretim Kurumları Yabancı Dil Sınavı) was introduced more recently specifically for the academic community. Unlike the YDS, YÖKDİL allows candidates to choose a specific field of study.

  • Scope: Field-specific. You choose one of three fields: Science (Fen Bilimleri), Health Sciences (Sağlık Bilimleri), or Social Sciences (Sosyal Bilimler).
  • Difficulty: Generally considered easier because the vocabulary is restricted to your chosen field. If you are a doctor, you take the Health Sciences exam and won't have to decipher a text about medieval history.
  • Validity: Widely accepted for Master's/Ph.D. applications and academic promotions (like Associate Professorship). However, it is not usually accepted for Civil Servant Language Compensation (Dil Tazminatı).

Scoring Systems: Are They the Same?

The excellent news for test-takers is that the underlying mathematics of both exams are identical.

Whether you are sitting for the YDS or the YÖKDİL, the structure is as follows:

  1. Number of Questions: 80
  2. Total Maximum Score: 100
  3. Point Value per Question: 1.25 points
  4. Negative Marking: None (Wrong answers do not cancel right answers).

Because the calculation logic is exactly the same, you can seamlessly use our YDS Score Calculator to evaluate your YÖKDİL practice tests as well!

Scenario: Deciding Between Exams

Dr. Smith, a foreign medical graduate in Turkey, needs a score of 65 to apply for a Ph.D. program.

  • He takes a YDS practice test. The broad vocabulary (politics, arts) trips him up. He gets 45 correct answers. Using the calculator, he sees his score is 56.25. He failed to meet the 65-point requirement.
  • He then takes a YÖKDİL (Health Sciences) practice test. Because the terminology is familiar to him, his reading speed increases. He gets 54 correct answers. Using the same calculator, his score is 67.50. He passed!

For Dr. Smith, taking the YÖKDİL is clearly the strategic choice.

Which Exam Should You Choose?

Choose YDS if:

  • You are aiming for civil servant language compensation.
  • The specific institution you are applying to explicitly states they only accept YDS.
  • You have an excellent, broad vocabulary covering multiple disciplines.

Choose YÖKDİL if:

  • You are applying for a Master's, Ph.D., or academic promotion (always double-check with the specific university institute first).
  • Your vocabulary is highly specialized in your professional field (Science, Health, or Social).
  • You struggle with the reading comprehension speed required for the diverse topics of the YDS.

Whichever path you choose, consistent practice is key. Keep taking mock exams, input your correct answer count into the YDS Score Calculator, set your target score, and monitor how many more correct answers you need to bridge the gap to success.
