The Flaw of "City Center" Calculations

When you select a city like "Los Angeles" from a drop-down menu on a standard Islamic app, the software uses a single, hardcoded coordinate (usually the historic downtown or city hall) to do the math.

Los Angeles County is massive, covering over 4,000 square miles. If you are hiking in the mountains on the northern edge of the county, or staying by the beach on the southern edge, your geographical relationship to the Kaaba is slightly different than the downtown coordinates the app is using. While the difference in angle might only be a fraction of a degree, for those seeking absolute precision—or those not near a listed city at all—this method falls short.

This is why coordinate-based calculation is the gold standard for Qibla determination.

Step 1: Finding Your Exact Latitude and Longitude

To use the coordinate method, you first need to find your current GPS data. You do not need dedicated GPS equipment; any modern smartphone with a map application will work.

Using Google Maps (iOS & Android)

  1. Open the App: Ensure your location services/GPS are turned on, and open the Google Maps app.
  2. Find Your Location: Tap the "My Location" button (the crosshairs icon) so the map centers on your current position, represented by a blue dot.
  3. Drop a Pin: Press and hold your finger directly on the blue dot (or on the specific building/campsite you are staying at) until a red pin drops.
  4. Read the Coordinates: Depending on your device, the coordinates will either appear directly in the search bar at the top or in the information panel that pops up at the bottom of the screen.
  5. Understand the Format: You will see a set of numbers that looks like this: 35.6895, 139.6917.
    • The first number is your Latitude (North/South).
    • The second number is your Longitude (East/West).

Crucial Note: Pay Attention to the Minus Sign (-)

When dealing with global coordinates, the hemisphere you are in dictates whether the number is positive or negative:

  • Latitude: North of the equator is positive; South of the equator (e.g., Australia, Brazil, South Africa) is negative (-).
  • Longitude: East of the Prime Meridian is positive; West of the Prime Meridian (e.g., North America, South America, UK) is negative (-).
